As parents, it's natural for us to wonder if our child's behavioural or academic challenges are part of normal development or if these are symptoms of an undiagnosed learning difference, attention disorder, or something else entirely. No matter the results, having a psychoeducational assessment for your child will give you a better understanding of your child's needs, and it will provide you practical recommendations on how to give your child the best chances of success
If your child is struggling with behavioural challenges, anxiety or depression, getting a better understanding through psychological analysis can help you get a better understanding of the causes
Kids with learning & thinking differences often have difficulty understanding or following instructions. They may have trouble remembering what someone has just told them. Academically, they may have poor performance in reading, spelling, writing, or math. Possible diagnoses include;
Because all kids behave in ways that look like ADHD (from time to time), it's not easy identifying real symptoms. However, kids with ADHD have a more difficult time with focus, impulse control, starting and completing tasks, memory issues, and may find it challenging managing their emotions. Some of the kids with ADHD are also hyperactive – causing them to always have to move in some way
As part of the psychoeducational assessment, your psychologist may recommend Autism Spectrum Disorder testing. Every single case is unique. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a diverse group of conditions. They are characterized by varying degrees of difficulty with social interaction and communication. Other characteristics are uncommon patterns of activities and behaviours, such as difficulty with transition from activity to activity, a focus on details and unusual reactions to sensations
Our mission is to provide you with answers to your most pressing questions, and to empower you with the tools and guidance necessary for your child's long-term success – both academically and for everyday life
Once you've booked your intake interview, we'll send you an electronic background information form that helps inform your psychologist of important aspects of your child's development, medical history, family history, etc. The psychologist will craft a list of psychometric tests and questionnaires for your child's testing session(s)
The testing takes place at one of our testing locations. For kids between 6-14 years old, the testing takes place over the course of 2 or 3 sessions. For adolescents 15-18 years old, typically complete the testing within 1 or 2 sessions. Every case is different, but on average the total duration of testing is anywhere between 4 and 7 hours. Every assessment also includes questionnaires that are sent to the parents and the child's teacher(s) to give additional perspective for your psychologist's considerations
Once the testing and the questionnaires have been completed, it takes about 2 weeks for the psychologist to analyze your child's results and prepare the psychoeducational assessment report. When the report is ready, you'll have a feedback session with the psychologist where you'll have a chance to discuss the results of the assessment – along with possible diagnoses, tailored recommendations, and accommodations for school
Fees for assessments are typically covered by most extended health benefits. If you qualify for OSAP, you may be reimbursed a portion of your assessment fees. Call us for details – 1-866-99-PSYCH (77924)
